Dia de los Muertos - Designer Soap Range

We are so excited about stocking lovely Jo'burg designer Fiona Goldthorpe's Day of the Dead Soap range.
Fiona launched this new range of 100% Natural handmade soap in collaboration with local Nature's Skin Food and we're obsessing over the 4 different variants, Activated Charcoal, Crushed Pearl infused with lemongrass oil, Asian Tree Bark with eucalyptus and spearmint oil, and Colombian Cacao.

Activated Charcoal
great for detoxifying skin

Crushed Pearl infused with lemongrass oil
made from real crushed pearls of Thailand. Highly regarded for centuries by the Chinese and with great anti-aging properties.
(real pearls?! Yes please!)

Asian Tree Bark with eucalyptus and spearmint oil
also wonderful for the skin, especially in healing skin conditions such as excema or psoriasis

Colombian Cacao
cacao was revered by the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilisations for its nutritional and cosmetic properties. Also infused with vanilla oils

A bit from Fiona: “The range is inspired by the Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’ theme. I love the graphic nature of this theme and thought it could transfer so well into this type of product. There isn’t really anything like it out there in the market. Locally designed, locally produced –  each piece is lovingly and beautifully made by hand. We went through quite a lengthy process of painstaking tweaks – to 3 different moulds, laser cutting, silicone moulding etc – along with deciding on which ingredients to use that would work well. I was quite pedantic that only 100% natural ingredients are added (also vegan friendly – no animal fats) and only essential oils added – no synthetic fragrance oils, that could irritate sensitive skin. And we have emerged with a rather beautiful unique product.”

Mmmm... can't decide which of the wonderful variants are our favourite, guess we'll just have to try them all!

Hope to see you in the shop soon.

We Love: A Week in THE KITCHEN

Karen Dudley's 'A Week in The Kitchen' is probably the most talked-about book at the moment. And after going to the launch and getting our hands on a copy, we can definitively see why!
Just like the buzzing small eatery in Woodstock 'A week in The Kitchen' is filled with hearty, mouth-watering dishes and delightful treats.
Packed with beautiful pictures and friendly faces, this is a must have in every kitchen or a fantastic gift.

We were also very excited to spot some of our Aprons worn by the girls at The Kitchen. Great for any aspiring chef to complete the picture, they are available at Hadeda in endless fun designs.

Can't wait to try out all the lovely recipes... Thanks Karen for spreading the foodie love.

Design Indaba 2012

This past weekend Cape Town was buzzing with creativity and excitement as the Design Indaba took place at the CTICC. One of our favourite local designers, Nicola de Jager asked us to use some of products for her Calavera stand. Her striking hand embroided skulls are all one of a kind and you can't help but instantly fall in love with these beauties. Better yet, teamed with our cushions, aprons and painted Mexican wall decorations, they're the perfect match.

A bit about Nicola
Calavera has evolved from a passionate love affair with art, bright colours and tattoos. Each piece begins once I have stitched up the eyes. I like to see it as a birthing process, there is no clear idea of what I would like each one to look like, once the eyes are in place they form a personality and so I choose the remaining colours, mouth and nose elements, etc. I use a combination of hand embroidery and beading. Every item is unique and produced entirely by hand. I am not a fan of mass production so time is not of the essence when producing each skull.

My inspiration comes from the collaboration of many elements: cultural significance, life and death, music, colour, tribal art. I would love to change society’s take on skulls being associated with dark and negative elements and instead for them to see them in a more positive light. I embrace embroidery as an art form as there is something powerful about creating something so intimate. The use of thread as a medium and embroidering as the application grounds me and slows me down to become more aware and present.

Frida Kahlo Inspiration

When asked why she painted so many self-portraits, Frida replied: " I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best."

Our range of Frida Kahlo prints on Canvas are R395 each

Today, more than half a century after her death, her paintings lives on in our homes and brighten up our lives.
During her lifetime, Frida created some 200 paintings, sketches and drawings related to her experiences in life, physical and emotional pain  and her turbulent relationship with Diego Rivera.
It is impossible to separate the life and work of this extraordinary person. Her paintings are her biography.

See you in the shop soon for your Frida fix!
